What is foxfire and why does it glow?

The fungus uses luciferin, reductase and luciferase to glow. Russian experts have found that the precursor of luciferin involved in light emission is also present in species that do not glow, but is much more common in luminescent fungi.

The researchers hope that in the future they will be able to create genetically modified trees that will emit light at night on city streets.
